In the evolving landscape of digital journalism, data journalism has emerged as a powerful hybrid genre that integrates computational methods, data visualization, and narrative storytelling. While its technical dimensions have been widely explored, less is known about how the structural elements of data journalism products correspond with the performance of journalistic roles. This study investigates the correlation between key elements of data journalism—such as data sourcing, visualization, interactivity, and transparency—and the manifestation of journalistic roles in COVID-19 news content produced by three Indonesian digital media outlets: Katadata.co.id, Tirto.id, and Kompas.id. Employing a quantitative content analysis of data-driven articles, the study assesses how these elements relate to six role performance dimensions defined by Mellado (2015). The results indicate a varied and context-dependent correlation across outlets and roles, particularly between elements such as data visualization and the interventionist and watchdog roles. These findings support the conceptualization of data journalism as a fluid and hybrid form, shaped by the newsroom's editorial logic, available resources, and broader media ecosystem. The study contributes to the growing scholarship on journalistic role performance and offers empirical evidence of how data journalism practices are shaped in the Global South context.).
